Work starts on lahar repairs

Work has begun to re-strengthen sections of the Whangaehu River around the Wahianoa Aqueduct that leads into the Moawhango Reservoir or dam. A number of lahars in September of last year degraded the Whangaehu River bed by about two metres, just exposing the top of the tunnel. ECNZ Central Generation civil engineer Ian Patience said rock type armour was washed away and the work will basically re-establish that. Byford's Construction have been contracted to do the protection work that has been underway for four weeks now. Seven people operating two diggers and three Volvo dump trucks expect to be finished within the next six to eight weeks. "We've had no problems as yet. A bit of rain, but that hasn't affected the Whangaehu very much," foreman Richard Chase said. The Wahianoa Aqueduct is fedby 22 intakes situated on the southern flanks of Ruapehu. A concrete ford across the Whangaehu at the aqueduct site was made impassable by the lahars and will be re-established as it provides the most convenient access to these intakes, Mr PatienCe said.
