OnSunday 14 July 64 bridge players from around the Central North Island converged on the Lion's den in Ohakune to compete in the Ohakune Bridge Club's 1996 Winter Picnic Tournament. Play consisted of two sessions, with 24 boards played in each session. The overall winners for the day were B Perkins and R Sicely with 121.52% followed closely by J Thirtle and A Cheng on 120.84%. Third and fourth places wenttoKMasden and N Christensen ahead of W Pedley and L Pedley with

scores of 119.86% and 1 15.28% respectively. The best performed local pairing and winners of the trophy for local players were Ron Martin and Heather Cranston who finished in fifth place overall with a score of 1 14.72%. Bridge on Wednesday 17 July started with Presideht Doug Bennett welcoming Brian Mason, Rose Martin and Fiona Brown to the club as new members. The winners of the northsouth direction were Betty Hammond and Rita Kaiwhare with 60.68% (59.58) and second placegetters with a score of 49.27% (56.25) were Brian Eades and Ron Frew. Margaret Corn wall and Him Cranston took out the east-west competition with 56.08% (50.00) just ahead of Tracy Ennis and Bill Te Karu on 54.09% (59.17). Newcomers Brian Mason and Rose Martin performed well finishing in fourth place east-west beating two pairs of regular players.
