Ash stops rugby
Volcanic ash fallout saw Raetihi Schoolboy rugby cancelled on Saturday. Four intermediate grade school boys found a thick, muddy charcoallike layer on the grass on the field. About 2-3 millimetres of ash fell on Raetihi overnight Friday - Saturday. Since the mountain eruption activity started again in June Raetihi has been lucky not to have experienced much ashfall and is only now beginning to realise the effect it has. Many people were out over the weekend trying to hose their cars, roofs and gutterings. A humorous side to the situation has been reported, from two women who arrived home in the wee small hours of Friday night. They were shocked to look in the mirror when they saw grey streaks caking their faces. It had been raining and neither woman had realised the ash was splattering all over them!
