Top service from TOPS course

Twenty weeks of fulltime hospitality training recently finished for a group of 10 local trainees now hoping to find places in the local industry. The Training and Opportunities Programme (TOPS) covered all aspects of the hospitality, food and beverage industry, ending with Hotel and Catering Industry Training Board certification. Waitressing to silver service standards, customer service, serving wine, making cocktails and general bar skills were included, as was the Ki wihost course. "We're hoping that the trainees can now go for the jobs that have until now been taken by out-of-towners," said Taumarunui Development Incorporated manager Sande Jansen, who presented the certificates. The course, run by Karina Kelland of Ohakune, is run under the TDI umbrella. Mrs Jansen said they are planning to run the course

at the same time next year, with the graduation timed

to coincide with the start of the winter season. Next year

they plan to run a catering course side-by-side with the

hospitality course, combining for much of the study.
