Photo competition a feature of Ohakune gardeners' month

Ohakune photographer Errol Vincent judged the Ohakune Garden Club's photo competition at their June meeting, explaining his choices saying he looked for the unusual. It was important that the subject be kept simple with no more than three elements or colours. He said there should be an emotional response when you look at a good photo. He demonstrated the use of different types of cameras and accessories which can be used to enhance photographic subjects. He showed some of his own work which had been enlarged and framed. Results of the garden photo competition: Autumn Scene: 1st M Warren, 2nd S Deadman, 3rd M Warren. Any other garden subject: 1st M Warren, 2nd L McQuarrie, 3rd S Deadman. Kunicraft proprietors Bea and Dot Barnes presented a trophy to Bev Kerr and Ian Harrison whose garden won the Civic Pride Award. Cheryl and Ray Wilson, Jane and Graham Dixon were second and third respectively. The Ohakune Garden Club "Garden of

the Year Award" was presented to Nita and Bruce Wilde with Fran Frew and Lois McQuarrie filling second and third placings. Monthly Club Competition: Arrangement of Foliage: 1st L McQuarrie, 2nd F Frew, 3rd T Warren. Flower of Choice: 1st F Frew, 2nd E Beavis, 3rd N Wilde. Shrub of Choice: 1 st F Frew, 2nd E Beavis, 3rd F Frew. Planned for later in the year is a'quiz evening with the Raetihi Garden Club to be invited. Members discussed more liaison with the Raetihi club and pot luck meals and exchange garden visits in summer was suggested. Peggy Frew reported on the hangi ng basket competition to be held in the Waimarino. Yates are sponsoring $250 worth of product prizes, The baskets will be judged at people' s homes during the last week in January, with a size criteria for the baskets a probability. The meeting was held on Tuesday 25 June at Nita and Bruce Wilde' s. The next meeting will be on Tuesday 23 July at Trish Smart's. Club contacts are: Maureen 3858455 or Lois 385-8891.
