Breach of bail

Tama Paulo, 21, unemployed garden hand of Ohakune, pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to answer a courtimposed bail in Auckland on 28 November last year following his arrest for non-appearance on 14 November. His explanation, through counsel, was that he was relying on others for transport to get him to Court but this had failed to eventuate. However, Judge Toomey told defendant that this was not an acceptable excuse and, by failing to appear or telephone the Court to tell them of his transport problem, he was ignoring his responsibilities. Paulo was convicted and fined $150, court costs $95. Counsel: Eric Forster.
