Pig alert

Ruapehu District Council stock rangers are issuing a strong warning to owners of pigs "control your animals or lose them". In addition to five pigs being impounded over recent weeks there have been other incidents of pigs wandering which are time consuming to council staff, said council chief executive Cliff Houston last week. Due to the damage they can cause the council will use the Impounding Act 1955 and destroying wandering pigs where capture is impracticable. In situations where the owner is known, the council will be seeking recovery of costs incurred which in some cases will be quite substantial, stated Mr Houston. "The bottom line is that if you don't want your pigs destroyed and you don't want to face paying out for the damage they cause or call-outs of council staff, make sure you keep them at home," he said.
