Waimarino adult riding

They may have been small in numbers — 15 riders — but they made up for it in enthusiasm, fun and fine weather, at the annual gymkhana in Waiouru on Sunday 19 May. They welcomed two riders and their helper from Turangi, Ruth, Michelle and Becky who are T aupo Riding Club members and the varied programme appealed to all tastes. The gymkhana is well suited to novice riders and green or young horses with only the "error and out" jumping class going above 75cms. The judge called a halt to this and declared a tie when Heather Cooper, riding Mountain Fox and Evelyn Cooper, riding Silver, were still jumping well at 1.15cm. Recently Evelyn and Heather Cooper attended a national training weekend at

Pauahatanui along with seven other riders from the Wellington area. The weekend was a great success and the NZRC chief examiner who was the instructor for "the weekend was pleased with the turn out and results. On 25 & 26 May a further weekend was held at the Taupo Equestrian Centre. The weekend was cold but not as cold as the four inches of snow on the return to Ohakune on Sunday evening. The course was well patronised with 10 riders and a further eight observers. The range of horse types and variation in riding levels of participants ensured a weekend of variety and saw vast improvements all round. Discussions were lively and the locals who did not have to travel were reluctant to go home. A national committee meetirig was held on the Friday evening prior to the training. "Due to being locked out of the venue, as our hosts were late arriving, six of us had a street party eating KFC on the roadside, all the time wondering if we were at the correct venue and hoping nothing had happened to the travellers," said Evelyn Cooper. The National Riding Club AGM has been set for 20 July 1996 in Blenheim.
