College speakers impress

In the junior English section ofthe school finals of the. Manu Korero speech competition held at Ruapehu College last week, Liana Herewini gave a creative and very humorous speech on a famous person (herself), not revealing who it was until the end. She kept her audience quite firmly in her hands. The senior English speeches were of a very high standard with two marks separating the first two placings. Rebecca Clark's speech, 'If I were famous what would it be for' , oozed humour, wit, understatement and confidence, said the judges, Mrs Jane Voon and Mrs Kaye Oliver. Lynette Haitana' s topic was a creative and beautifullycontrolled emotional treatment of abortion. Chanel Wood and Julie Imhoff in the junior Maori section displayed maturity and very good control of their speeches. Raana-Ellen Mareikura received the perfect score from the judges, Mrs Te Uta Murphy-Peehi and Mrs Vera Wilson. In RaanaEllen' s speech onTe Aroha she showed expression, stance and mita (dialect) zin the most beautiful way and was a perfect ambassador for the school. Results: Korimako (senior English) - 1 Rebecca Clark (Weka) 180/200, 2 Lynette Haitana (Tui) 178, 3 Tineke Edwards (Huia) 168 and Brendon Morgan (Huia) 168; Pei Te Hurinui Jones (senior Maori) 1 with a perfect score of 200/200, Raana-Ellen Mareikura (Tui); SirTuri Carrol (junior English) 1 Liana Herewini (Kiwi), 2 Pinenga Williams (Huia) and Lila Taputoro(Weka); Rawhiti Ihaka (junior Maori) 1 Chanel Wood (Tui), 2 Julie Imhoff (Weka), 3 Te Kawai Mareikura (Tui). Mrs Merrilyn George, organiser of the annual Manu Korero speeches, said the regional finals will be held at St Augustines College in Wanganui, on 2 August, and the winners of the school section will be entered i n the T aranaki/W anganui/Ruapehu final.
