Re-alignment for Parapara Highway

A section of the Parapara Highway, near Parihauhau Road, which has been reduced to single lane traffic only for several months, is to be re-aligned. Transit New Zealand Regional State Highways manager, Graham Taylor, said the section of road, outside Lawrence' s property, is being threatened by an unstable hill slope above and undermined by the Upokongaro stream below. Due to the road's precarious position, Mr Taylor said Transit NZ had decided rather than carry out repairs, the highway would be re-aligned to cross onto the other side of the Upokongaro Stream. "Two culverts will be built to carry the highway across the stream. Once past the threatened area the road will recross the stream and rejoin the existing highway", said Mr Taylor. Mr Taylor said all affected landowners had given their approval to the project and resource consents had been obtained. "Construction should be underway by early August", he said. "Transit NZ is currently developing a strategy for improving the Parapara Highway and the Lawrence' s realignment complements that", Mr Taylor said.
