Successful golf tournament

The Waimarino Golf Club held its annual 72-hole match play tournament earlier this month which was deemed ahuge success (see report, P16 Ruapehu Bulletin, 14May). The tournament, held 1 1 & 12May, was sponsored by Turoa Skifields along with Dominion Breweries and Mobil Oi!. RESULTS: The tournament was won by P Manahi from Waiouru who beat G Signal from Palmerston North. Third in the open division was G Ellis from Levin. In the Makaranui Division two locals B Drinkwater and T Frederick had a very good match with Barry playing the more consistent golf winning through. Third was H Robinson from Taihape. In Flight A, R Shields from Levin was successful against Waimarino' s B Goldfinch. A Thomas from Taihape was third. The club president John Hammond improved his match playing ability over the weekend by winning Flight B from P Dench of Palmerston North. S Mathews from Levin was third. J Mcllroy, Waimarino, won Flight C from K Roddick, Palmerston North, and third was T Geraghty from Waimarino. In Flight D, K Gleghorn beat Palmerston

North clubmate B Wehipeihana and R Cotterill from Taihape was third. In Flight E, young Dwayne Marsh was successful against D Ahuriri from Waiouru, third was J Whale, Waimarino. In Flight F G Hendra from Marton beat local golfer J. Taoa with third going to J. Forrester, Palmerston North. In Flight G D Henry of Waimarino beat A. Wehipehana from Palmerston North, with N. Elliott of New Plymouth third. There were some very good matches throughout the weekend when the weather and the course did the local club proud. Special thanks were expressed: to the women for providing the lunches and looking after the bar; to Ross Brown for getting every one to the tee on time and for collating the results; to the committee for their efforts; to Pat Mcllroy for getting the prizes and special thanks also to the major sponsor Turoa Ski Resort and to Angus and Karen Grimwade for giving their time to present the prizes.
