Turoa staff excited at early major snow

Over 300mm snow fell overnight at Turoa Ski Resort covering the mountain and providing the first major snowbase for the year and closing the mountain road from the 3.5km point. "This is the first good base-building snow of the season," said marketing manager Joanna Savage. "Another couple of really good snow falls like this and we will be opening for the season," she said. "The last time Ohakune had as much snow as this in the village was

back in 1992 when 10cm of snow fell around the town." "That was in June" said Miss Savage, "so with such a huge snow fall this early in the year, it looks like we'll have another bumper snow season at Turoa. We're gearing up for one of the best seasons yet with phenomenal interest from skiers and boarders just itching to get out there and enjoy it". Developments at Turoa will include a new, state-of-the-art snow groomer Turn to Page 2

New features such as an extra wide, flexible tiller will allow Turoa to groom greater widths of snow which follow the contours of the slope more closely. 'The end result for skiers and snowboarders will be better quality groomed snow with interesting curves and rolls to play on," said Miss Savage. Turoa plans to open mid-to late June. Over the last five years the average opening date has been 22 June.

"We have a lot of new entries each year which keeps the whole race fresh and exciting. We also have competitors who come back year after year. The one thing they all have in common is the drive to achieve and reach their goals and the Telecom Mobile Mountains to Sea sure stretches them in more ways than one!" he said.
