Bull sale pleases despite slump
By Amiria Teki Last week' s Okahu bull sale saw a very sati sfactory result according to Kelly 0' Neill who, together with his father Pat and their family, run the Okahu Stud farm at Raetihi. Kelly said that, given a world wide slump in beef prices, they were satisfied with the prices fetched. Of the 25 bulls presented nine were passed in. However, some may be purchased later. Top price went to lot 1, Okahu Headline, sired by Haroldson's Headstart 173a, aCanadian import, and dam Okahu Rosa 177. The bull went to Wanganui for $5100.
Another good price was fetched by Okahu Jester, sired by Okahu Genius k632, dam Okahu Lydia 400, $4400. Another bull from Okahu Genius whose dam was Okahu Amulet fetched $4400. Other prices ranged from $ 1 300 to $3800. The auctioneers said that it was good to see the confidence in buyers who came back year after year, which said a lot for the good, reliable breeding from the Okahu Stud. This was the 26th Okahu polled Hereford sale. The present Okahu Stud was founded 49 years ago from selected cows and heifers from the original Mayfield Stud of D P, Buchanan, founded in 1892.
