Pride of Lions
Lion Michael Crowley has become the second member of the Ruapehu club to be presented the Melvin Jones Award — the highest accolade a Lions service club member can achieve. Mr Crowley received his award at the club's monthly dinner Tuesday last week. Hejoined the club in 1968, three years after it was chartered, and has served in every position in the club including as president twice. He has also served on Lions' national cabinet. Ian Strachan, still serving as a member, was the first to receive the award. The Melvin Jones award is named after the founder of Lions who, as a Chicago insurance agent in 191-7, worked to bring service clubs together into one strong unit. Also recognised at the meeting were two new Ruapehu Lions members, Murray Swan and Ian Hopkirk.
