Waimarino golf tournament

The Waimarino Golf Club hosted its annual 72 hole tournament on Sunday 1 2 May with 70 players. This mens tournament has been played here for the last 49 years and according to president John Hammond, it is one of the few tournaments of its kind still running. Competitors were from Foxton, Levin, Palmerston North, Feilding, Taihape, Wanganui, the-King Country clubs and the local areas including Waiouru. The tournament was run over two days, with some exciting match play which went close to the wire. The open champion for the tournament, went to Pompie Manahi from Waiouru. Dwyane Marsh from Ohakune took out his section of play — in fine form the young 13-year-old won 4 and 3. The president thanked the starters, Ross Brown, Con Heinold and Graeme Lind, particularly Ross Brown who has been a member of the club for 46 years and starter for this tournament for many of those years. He also thanked the sponsors, Turoa Ski Resort Ltd represented by Angus Grimwade, saying their support was vital to the success of the tournament.
