Okahu stud opens for bull buyers
Okahu Stud of Raetihi, owned by Pat O'Neill and family, hosted another Trust Bank open day last week, in readiness for their sale on 20 May , their 26th annual polled Hereford sale. There was quite a good interest of buyers at the open day, who were there to view 25 rising 2-year old bulls. The visitors numbered 20-30 and came from the central North Island including agents and buyers from the Manawatu, with good local interest. Pat and Kelly O'Neill showed their 10-month old bull calf Lomu II, at the recent Royal Easter show in Auckland. At his first showing, the 491kgs Lomu took out the bull calf champion of champions 1 996 and reserve champion. Kelly said his name was certainly a talking point and amongst the most popular there. Lomu ' s sire is Okahu Genius and Dam is Okahu Wildale 38. Another Okahu bull showed was the rising 2-year old of Showpride, weighing in at 942kgs. Showpride won his class too. "Our aim has always been to produce heavy muscled, good hind-quartered cattle, able to compete with the sheep on the hills," said Pat O'Neil. Okahu Stud is situated two miles north of Raetihi.
