Ohakune Kura Kaupapa approved by ministry
The steering committee looking at the establishment of a kura kaupapa — a full immersion Maori language school — for Ohakune has received confirmation of approval from Ministry of Education. Funding for "Te Kura Kaupapa Maori Ki Ngati Rangi", is expected to start from 1 January 1997 for operational and staffing needs. "We, the Roopu Whakahaere and indeed the Iwi O Ngati Rangi me Whanganui, are elated, and look forward to the challenges this Kura brings," said committee chairperson Noel Akapita in a press release last week. "We are fully aware and understand that nothing comes without its ups and downs, but we are prepared and will work vigorously forthe benefitofour tamariki mengauri whakatipu." They intend to set up the kura at Maungarongo Marae in Burns Street, Ohakune, with a 1997 roll of about 30 children with an annual increase of 10 per cent anticipated. "Kura kaupapa is not a new concept for us," said Mr Akapita, "currently Te Kura Kaupapa O Manu Korero is in existence on the marae under the jurisdiction of the Ohakune Primary School." "Whanau members of the marae have diseussed the notion of total autonomy as far back as 10 years and what is eventuating now are the dreams and desires of our elders coming to fruition." "Finally it is indeed timely to take this path for the progress, stability and development of our children and hope the relationship we have built up over the years with our local schools remain in Order that all of our children benefit from both establishments," he concluded.
