DEPARTMENT OF LABOUR-OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH OSH, Occupational Safety and Health, is the section of the Department of Labour responsible for administering the Health and Safety in Employment Act, 1992. Each year OSH develops a business plan which targets specific types of workplaces. This year, a quarter of the target groups are in the Agricultural Horticultural sectors, locally, growers are one of the groups selected. A three-step package has been prepared to assist employers to develop effective health and safety systems by explaining how to identify and prioritise hazards in the workplace, and develop a comprehensive plan for dealing with them, training and supervision issues, and accident reporting and investigation plans. An OSH inspecjor and Occupational Health Nurse are planning to hold seminars in the region for employers on how to use the package. Follow-up visits to properties to inspect the workplace health and safety policy by OSH staff will follow. The first seminar will be held on Thursday 18 April 1996 from 7.00pm-9.00pm at the Lion's Den, Ayr St, Ohakune.
