Army garden comp revived
Whp said the Carriapa Shield was dead? After reading an article in the Ruapehu Bulletin about the cancellation of Waiouru' s 40 year old garden competition, the Commander of the Army Training Group Colonel Ray Seymour stepped in. His wife Belle was appointed a judge, as were community co-ordinator Ali Tamepo and last years Cariappa shield winner Lyn Lumsden. The three took into account the lateness of the season and after a short-list of 15 judged a Bullot Street address the best. Jo Tutauha recei ved the Cariappa shield from the Commander. Mrs Tutauha and her husband Errol were also given $50 for their efforts. John and Lesley Sole of Balance Road were judged second receiving $30 and Leon and Jessie Taurau of McKinnon Crescent came third and received $20. Prizes were awarded through the Waiouru Community Fund, and next year there will be prizes on offer for some of the biggest vegetables said Mrs Tamepo.
