Glider to grace Ruapehu skies

A motorised glider has been gracing the skies of the Waimarino in recent weeks — the latest purchase of the Ruapehu Gliding Club. The two-seater self-launching glider, bought for $62,000, is an 1 8-year-old German Qrob 109. The idea behind the purchase is to do away with the cable launching system and the need for a tow plane which is not often available. Club member Ian Heappy said with the cable launch system, it was often not possible to reach the thermal updraughts from Wards' Airstrip on Valley Road. He said with the new plane, they will be able to fly

to wherever the thermals are forming, or to Ruapehu for ridge soaring. This area is good in summer for riding thermals, and in winter the thrill is ridge soaring above Ruapehu. An added bonus for gliding here is the fantastic views. To give people a taste, the gliding club is holding open days over Easter, offering people trial flights for $45, on any day that flying conditions are suitable. The aim of the open days is to try to boost membership of the club which is presently at 10, but has been as high as 45. There is no obligation to go any further than the trial flight.
