Cubs celebrate turning 80
This year the Cub section of the Scout Association is 80 years old, and the local Waimarino Cubs were challenged to hold a birthday party in a high-profile location to mark the event. The original intention was to have the party in the Turoa carpark on Mt Ruapehu but weather conditions forced the use of an alternate venue. The Waiouru Cubs didn't get this change to the programme, so they can claim to having had, possibly, the highest party in the country. The 34 Cubs present representing Ohakune, Raetihi, Horopito and Rangataua gathered at the Ohakune Carrot at the western entrance to Ohakune where they played games, had a barbecue dinner and birthday party. Coincidentally, it was also Cub leader Michelle Hamilton-Low's birthday although she elaimed she was more in the vicinity of "twenty-something" and not 80! All the Cubs and their parents gave enthusiastic support to the Cub Pack and their leaders, who aim to run an exciting outdoor programme while teaching skills and having a lot of fun.
