Marks in time

Raetihi School's history reflects events in the local, national and international communities. In past log books are found some items of interest: 8 August 1902, school closed for Coronation of King Edward VII. August, 1907, school closed because of measles epidemic.

March 1918, bush fire and cyclone close school . 1 1 November 1920, Roll of Honour unveiled. 3 February 1931, severe earthquakes interrupt work for one and a half hours. One chimney severely cracked. 22 April 1940, householders' meetingdecidedto change the school motto to

'Unite in Service — Whakakotahi ki te Mahi'. 7 February 1952, school closed — death of King George VI. 29 May 1953, ceremony held to mark Coronation of Elizabeth II. 9 June 1959, His Excellency Lord Cobham, Governor General, and Lady Cobham visit school. 26 November 1963. School observed two minute si lence for President J F Kennedy after he was assassinated. 4 February 1968, preschool established at school. 20 July 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin land on the moon at the same time the school boiler blew up! 4 December 1 969 , reception for their Excellencies Sir Arthur and Lady Porrit held at the school.
