School song still sung

Raetihi has a school song, reputed to be written by Mrs Hird, wife of the first headmaster WE Hird. Jt is sung to the tune 'Ashgrove', and is regularly sung at school functions: Down in a green valley There runs a clear streamlet, there stands a school building, the Raetihi School. By playgrounds and gardens Its walls are surrounded And down by the river A fine swimming pool. Where e'er I may wander In lands far asunder I e'er shall remember The Raetihi School.. Away to the eastward Stands Mt Ruapehu Its snow covered summit Far up in the sky. Reminding us children At work and at playtime, To reach ever upward And always aim high. Whe'er I may wander, In lands far asunder, I e'er shall remember The Raetihi School.
