Close to a mess...but all under control
A controlled burn-off in Waiouru last Wednesday went according to plan said helicopter controller Staff Sergeant Dave Hodgson. The fire stretched 500 by 300 metres and at the closest reached withirt 50 metres of the Officers Mess. Ideal wind conditions prevailed for the light-up and burn-off of the slash from Pinus contorta felling. Raetihi pilot Rick Harding started the blaze while the full staff of 14 permanent and 10 volunteer firemen (and women) manned the perimeters and the four Hino rural firefighting appliances on stand-by. In the Officers Mess life went on as usual for mess workers, apart from watching the fire about 30 me-
tres from the fence line. "It was pretty spectacular, nothing that you see
everyday," said driver Dallas Reynolds. Fire-lighting may not
happen everyday, but fire fighting and rescue work do. The Waiouru fire sta-
tion is looking for volunteers. (06) 387 61 1 1 extension7115.
