Waimarino golf
Opening day for the 1 996 season saw a field of 48 gather to see the new season in. The club captain decided on a 4-ball best-ball par mixed competition. As the men outnumbered the ladies a mens drawn partners event was also held. The playing conditions suited many players with some outstanding scores resulting. The honour of hitting the first ball of the season went to the president' s wife, a very nervous Helen, who stepped up to the first tee and hit a very nice shot much to her relief. Results Mixed 4 ball: 1st Sarah Lind & Ben Law +12; 2nd Barbara Dempsey & Ken Crossan +11; 3rd Heather Cranston & Stu Magee +1 1 ; 4th Pania Mowat & Graham Lind +9; 5th Francie Geraghty & Bryce Henry +9; 6th Elayne Goldfinch & John Hammond +9. Mens 4 ball: 1st Dana Blackburn & Con Heinold +10; 2nd Don Windle & Paul Beckett +8. Twos were scored by Alan Murdie, Graham Lind, John Hammond, Bryce Henry, Pat Mcllroy, Don Windle and Dana Blackburn. Some outstanding individual scores: Paul Beckett nett 63, Brian Hays nett 64, Dana Blackburn and Ken Crossan nett 65, and Bryce Henry with a nett 66 saw the mens course rating for the day set at 66; Sarah Lind with yet another good round of nett 67, Elayne Goldfinch nett 69, Heather Cranston nett 70, and new junior Jennie Murdie with nett 70, helped the ladies rating be set at 70. At the conclusion, the team to play the 1st round of the Presidents TrOphy at Tawhero on Sat9 March starting at 11.00am was announced. The team: Brian Goldfinch, Barry Drinkwater, Steve Gray, Graham Lind, Bryce Henry, Joe Martin, Ken Crossan and Jason Whale.
