Cubs check out Taupo

Twenty six Cubs and Keas from Ohakune, Raetihi and Waiouru linked up recently with five of their fellow Cubs from Taupo, for a full weekend of exploring the sights in and around Taupo. They stayed at the Baden Powell Lodge situated right on the waterfront of Lake Taupo. Under the control of leaders and parent helpers, they visited Cherry Island where the Cubs were able to feed and pat the animals that roamed freely around the park. In the distance, the Cubs could see people bungy jumping, with many suggesting this as an activity that could be included on their next visit! After an afternoon of swimming in the lake, the Cubs' next stop was

Wairakei Valley where they enjoyed a barbecue meal. The evening's activities centred around the eampfire, where many of the parents found themselves singing songs andactinginskits, one even having an unexpected shower! He got his own back the next morning, using a pot and lid to wake everyone up for an early moming swim. Sunday was a visit to the Prawn Farm, where the Cubs were all eager to learn about how they were grown, their life-span and habits. Told they were cannibals, the cubs kept their distance from the pools.

The Taupo Observatory was next on the itinerary where all the Cubs' questions on eruptions and volcanoes were answered. At most of the venues, the hosts were a bit overwhelmed with the numbers of the group (44 in total), but soon found that the Cubs were keen to watch, listen and learn all about what was being shown to them. The weekend was fairly relaxed, with everyone enjoying themselves (especially the parents, who are already asking when the next trip will be), and the Cubs all being extremely well behaved.
