Kindy starts year with new gear
Keningston Kindergarten in Waiouru has upgraded its play equipment thanks to money from the McCarthy Trust, Powerco, Waiouru Sports Trust and the Warrant Officers Promotion Courses. Treasurer Diane Tews said the children now have a new water trough, bike and push-chair as well as new books, blocks and music equipment. "The teachers are really thrilled to start the year with this new equipment," she said. Teacher Shelley Newson said the children love it. In a separate venture the kindergarten is getting a new play fort which is being built by soldiers of Headquarters Battery, 16 Field Regiment, under the direction of Ser-
geant Major Chris Tews. The fort was designed by kindergarten president Major George Rooks in conjunction with the teachers and committee. Funds have been raised from a lottery grant, the Army UPF, Trustbank and a lot of small amounts from different sources, Mrs Tews said. Landscaping is also going to be carried out. The existing sand pit will be improved and extended, swings will be relocated and trees will be planted. The tall gum trees already at the kindergarten have been topped by Jim Tweeddale for no charge. Mr Tweeddale also donated a truck load of wood for a kindergarten raffle. "He's been really generous," Mrs Tews said
