student School has started again. A whole new year at Ruapehu College. It didn't take long before we found out that this year was not going to be the same as last year. We are not in Forms any more but in something called Levels. Form 3 is now Level 9, Form 4 is Level 10 and so on. Student Leaders Head boy and head girl for 1 996 are Andrew Murdie and Rebecca McDougal. Deputy head boy and girl are Manu Tuhoro and Raana-Ellen Mareikura. After a few days at school it was time to elect our whanau leaders:, Huia's is Lee McCann with Gloria Peni her deputy, and Nikora Gupwell and Greg Tuthill his deputy; Kiwi, Shey Rangiihi and Tonia Lumsden deputy, and Raymond Hemopo with Richard Shanks deputy. For Tui is Marcia Woods and Gail Ruke, Justin Mackay and Daniel Forster; For Weka is Rebecca Clarke and Kaye Murdie, Manu Tuhoro and John Hays. Swimming Sports On 8 February we held our annual swimming competition. The whole school went to Waiouru and the team spirit in each whanau was very high, We started with the individual championships where Rochelle Te Huia and Jan de Moor dominated the intermediate girls and senior boys respectively. Jan also broke four records, so did Terehia Richards. Everyone did their best in the competitions and the people who didn't swim did a good job on the side screaming and cheering on their whanau mates. One guy lost his pants when he was diving into the water. But accidents like the ones we had always make things more fun. After the individual championships we swam the relays. The teachers swam against Level 11 students and the students won (of course!).

At the end of the day we had fun events swimming with balloons, soccer balls and hoops with a lot of people participating. Tui won the inter- whanau competition with 402 points being ahead of all the other whanau on participation points. Weka was second with 390 points, Huia third with 259 and, Kiwi fourth with 187 points. Mr Haig was in charge of the Swimming Sports 1996.
