Board says no to Ruatiti rubbish transfer station
A rubbish transfer station in or near the Ruatiti Domain would be too close to the existing Orautoha Transfer Station, the Waimarino Community Board has decided. At their February meeting the board decided that instead, a skip bin or drums should be retained at the domain and emptied less frequently than as at present. Before them was the issue of rubbish collection at or near the domain. At present a skip bin is located in the domain but it is used to only 10 per cent of its capacity. It has been suggested that a transfer station be set up at the old dog dosing strip. This would require resource consents and site works which would involve considerable costs. The issues covered the needs of the local people versus the needs of campers. In a report to the board environmental asset manager Suzienne Sledgers outlined four options: to continue operating the skip bin service at the domain; to retain the
. skip bin at the domain but reduce the frequency of emptying; to cease to provide the skip bin at the domain; and to remove the bin and establish a transfer station at the ex-dog dosing strip. The board heard that some residents felt the domain site was inconvenient for residents and only served visitors; that the Orautoha site was less than five kilometres from the domain; that the Orautoha station was used to less than a quarter of capacity. Board member Gary Rawnsley said most Ruatiti residents drive past the Orautoha station regularly so it would not be inconvenient for them to use that site. Member Robert Horne said five kilometres was too close, suggesting that if a transfer station was established there, soon places such as Rangataua would be asking for one.
