Nasty Australian not a newcomer
A nasty little biter from Australia that has featured in the news lately has been found in the Waimarino, but it is not a first. "The White Tailed Spider has been around here for about 100 years," Department of Gonservation officer Tim Mitchell told the Bulletin. He said the spider was "over-rated" and, while it can deliver a nasty sting, is probably on a par with wasps in that the reaction to the bite can vary from minor to serious depending on the person it bites — whether they are prone to allergic reaction. The spider has been found in a number of locations in recent days. Mr Mitchell said if people find the spider in their homes and they are concerned about it, they should hire a pest destruction expert who will spray the house. The treatment lasts about two years. The spider is black and brown, an adult is about the size of a 10 cent piece and it has a white dot on the end of its abdomen. It lives off other spiders and is common in houses. It moves very fast and is known to be aggressive.
