Raetihi School centenary shaping up

Plans for Raetihi School' s centenary celebrations are well in hand according to planning committee representative Gail Imhoff. Bookings for accommodation, both commercial and private, are high indicating a good attendance. However, registrations from local people are slow to come in which is a worry for organisers. Early registrations are necessary to help with catering plans, said Gail. The cut-off date is Thursday 1 February. Gail asks that if anyone has photographs they are willing

to lend can they contact her, 28 Mt View Road, Ph 3854476. She would also welcome any anecdotes. Gladys Irwin provides one regarding the walk to school for her mother, Edith Forster, when she was a child. Although only a few miles, the walk was tough through bush and along a dirt track. In winter her mother used to wrap warm coals in woollen cloth for the children to warm their hands. For further information write to Raetihi School Centennial Committee, Box 88, Raetihi. For accommodation phone the information centres, 385-4805 or 385-8427.
