Second wheels carnival plans shaping up
The second annual Carnival of Wheels will take place on 16 - 17 March, with planning having been under way since Decernber to confirm sponsors and develop a programme of events aimed to attract the immagination of the community and the participants in the national cycle race, the "Round Ruapehu Classic". Race organiser Warrick Funnell from the W anganui Cycle Club said he is expecting similar participation to last year in the main event
of about 90 of New Zealand' s top riders including those from the national team. He also said there is considerable growth in the number of novice riders around New Zealand and he is hopeful this will be reflected in the novice race. The carnival weekend will also include highlights from the inaugural event held last year including the champagne steam train excursions, criterium cycle races around Ohakune' s Junction circuit and motor cycle racing in 'buckets' —
home modified smaller motorcycles. A new event to be known as the "Wacky Wheels" is being planned as a fun event for the community. The event is a race from Clyde Street to the Junction using non-motor-ised propulsion so long as the contraption has wheels. The top prize will go to the most outrageous design. Carnival details will be available next week from the Ohakune Information Centre.
