National Park School is one of 174 schools nation- wide that have joined the Directly Resourced Salaries (DRS) regime. Under DRS the school will receive $127,425 for salaries the 1996 year in contrast to the figure of $108,382 that the Ministry of Education says they would
receive under.the Centrally Resourced Salaries regime. The school has a 'grading roll' of 60 for 1996 and 3.3 full time teacher equivalent positions. The 1 74 schools that have volunteered to join the controversial system are responsiTum to Page 2 •

The ministry says the advantage of the DRS system is that such schools may employ any number of teachers and organise their school management in a way they see best meets the "unique needs" of their pupils as long as they remain within budget. "Centrally staffed schools are told each year by the Education Minister how many teachers they may have and what management structure they must follow," states the minister, Lockwood Smith. 1
