Dramatic volcanic lava flows, craters and lakes make this "the finest one day walk in NZ". Geology Field Trip. A fascinating insight into the volcanic and glacial events of the past that have shaped Tongariro National Park as we see it today. Sunday 21 January Whakapapaiti Headwaters. We go off the beaten track to explore lava flows, waterfalls, Stantons memorial and the rare edelweiss of the Whakapapaiti Valley. Kiwi Count. A 4WD trip into the Tongariro Forest to learn more about our national bird. Monday 22 Januarv Fire Fighting Demo. A demonstration of the use of special equipment needed to fight fires in remote areas. Saturday 27 January Tongariro Crossing (refer above). Wairere Stream Wander. Follow the stream past waterfalls to a small volcanic cone. Evening talk. Threatened species in Tongariro National Park. Sundav 28 Januarv Pukekaikiore Peak. An off-trail scramble over lava flows and up Pukekaikiore. Makatote Gorge. A track through beautiful podocarp forest, with a glimpse of the wild Makatote River gorge and a 23 m waterfall.
