Out of range
• On baturday 13 January there were 12 visitors to Mt Ruapehu from the Ohakune side, on 14 January, eight, all of them foreign. The ranger centre was not open on either of these days. Ruapehu is an unpredictable mountain and weather will change without warning. Advice at the ranger station is an imperative for the safety of all, particularly in the height of our tourist season. The attitude of 'she'll be right' at Cave Creek may be okay for Kiwis, but naive foreign visitors must surely be protected. Why, at the height of our summer season, is our ranger station not manned 24 hours a day? Emergencies do not occur only during office hours. No way should we have to rely on volunteers should an emergency arise through a lapse of competency by the Department of Conservation.
