Dame Cath reviews cadets
The outgoing Governor-General, Dame Catherine Tizard, visited Waiouru last week to review the Officer Cadet School march-out held on Wednesday. Twenty officer cadets became 2nd lieutenants after a year of training including three Fijians, two Australians, one Papua New Guinean, two Tongans and two Bruneins.
An Australian, Glenn Jones, took away four awards including the top award, the Sword of Honour. Dame Catherine made the most of her trip to Waiouru taking up the opportunity of dri ving an M 1 1 3 armoured personnel carrier on Thursday and firing the 105 millimetre light gun. Soldiers from Queen Alexandra' s Mounted Rifles and 16th Field Regiment
organised the demonstrations and the 'hands on' experience before Dame Catherine took a tour of the Army Training Group in an airforce Iroquois. The windy day and bumpy ride didn't deter the Governor-General at all — she wanted to fly with the doors open but was politely declined. Dame Catherine then lunched at the Army Marae in Waiouru before returning to Wellington by road.
