Karate winds up
The local Karate Club ended its training for the year with its end of year grading assessment last week. Whanake Rangataua Karate Shotokan trains at the Ruapehu Health and Fitness Centre under chief instructor Charles Mareikura, 5th Dan, ably accompanied by instructors, 17 yearold Raana-Ellen Mareikura and her 14 year old brother Sharleszane Mareikura, both degree blackbelts. This year saw the class recommencing late in the year with a handful of old students attending and a steady core of new entrants staying on to the bitter end. Their instructor Raana-Ellen Mareikura, gave high praise for the new entrants' enthusiasm to learn as much as possible. Ranging from four year olds up to college students, Raana-Ellen had the class moving and administering the acquired skills with precision and determination. "There are some good techniques and the skills are very high," said Raana-Ellen. "We certainly hope the enthusiasm and motivation will be even more in the New Year. They are a joy to work with and the behaviour is simply the best."
