Ruapehu College junior prize giving
The Ruapehu College junior prize giving was held in the school hall on Friday 8 December. Past pupil Natalie Taylor from Rangataua was the guest speaker. Ms Taylor was a past pupil of the college and attended Victoria University, where she graduated, in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science degree. While attending college, Natalie had many successes including being awarded dux of the school and being voted head girl. Natalie has spent the last year in America. Part of that time was spent working and being involved in the America' s Cup eyent, working for the Mighty Mary syndicate. Ms T aylor addressed the school on the life of a university student, the fun side as well as the serious side of having to settle down and study in order to pass exams. She spoke about her experiences in America, and said she is considering further university study in future. Ms Taylor wished the pupils every success in their next year at college. Teachers leaving college There are four teachers leaving the college this year — Kath Campbell who has been with the college since 1988,
Wayne Marsh since 1987 and Glyn Hubbard, who has taught for 29 years. Dan Fournier, from Canada, has been i with the college for a year as an exchange teacher. The following students are the major junior prize winners for this year: Principal's Award, StevenSue. Junior Literary Award, Ei Leen Voon. Whaikorero - speechmaking for juniors: Tane, Marino Akapita; Wahine, Tomairangi Mareikura. Speeches: Form 3, Jenny Creswell; Form 4, Ei Leen Voon. Te Kaahu Trophy, Sharleszane Mareikura. . Service Awards, Rebecca Martin, Vernon Mcllory, Campbell Crossan, Richard Shanks. Form 4 students Steven Sue won subject awards for economics, graphics, mathematics, social studies (plus excellence in PE and a merit award in science) and Ei Leen Voon for art, science, English, social studies (plus merit awards for PE and graphics). Form 3 students Hayley MacKay won subject awards for typing, economics plus awards for PE and mathematics and music. Emma Forster won subject awards for typing, graphics, home economics, computer studies, mathematics, social studies, science and music.
