Angling service rewarded

Harry Brown from Raetihi became the first recipient of the annual Bruce McKenzie Memorial Award at the Taranaki Fish and Game dinner at the Collegiate Motor Inn, Wanganui, on Saturday 25 November. The award was created by the council and Mrs Dawn McKenzie, for outstanding service to fish and game in the Taranaki region. It is a memorial to Mrs McKenzie' s late husband Bruce McKenzie, who was the previous chairman of the Taranaki Fish and Game Council. Harry Brown has been involved in fish and game issues in the Ruapehu region since he first began fishing in 1936 and at present is a voluntary councillor on the Taranaki Fish and Game Council. He played a crucial role in gaining a National Water Conservation Order for the Manganui a Te Ao River near Raetihi in 1989. This order protects the famous trout fishery and home to the blue duck from hydro-electric power development. Harry said he was honoured to be the first recipient of the annual award and promised to be actively involved in protecting the fish and game resource for many years to come. The trophy is a carved and painted wooden mallard duck by Brad Parkes of Wellington.
