ADVERTORIAL Engineers' clients invited 'have a go'

About 100 people attended a promotional evening at Ohakune Engineering last Wednesday evening, put on by owners Bruce and Karen Cranston. The evening began with a tour of the workshop, with demonstration stations set up so clients could 'have a go' at the equipment and machinery sold and used by the tradespeople employed at Ohakune Engineering. Recent extension of the workshop and the new offices and show room were admired. According to Bruce and Karen, "it was a relief to get the office and all that goes with it out of our house, where it's been for the past eight years." Bruce says promotions have lead to very positive saies of BOC Gas Products and made his business the fifth largest stockist in New Zealand. Over the past eight years Bruce and Karen have built their business up from a staff of six to a permanent staff of twenty-two. They currently have two apprentices and Bruce says all his staff are local. The team at Ohakune Engineering has an extensive range of services to offer - machining, welding, repairs and maintenance and manufacturing along with crane, compressor and Cherry Picker hire and a full mobile service. Newly appointed foreman Les Coenraads, an employee of five years, says they can construct anything from the tiniest screw to one of the most efficient carrot washing machines in Australasia. Recently a local grower asked "Can you make me one of these?" referring to a carrot washer he had seen. "Of course" was the reply, and the result is reportedly one of the best in the Southern Hemisphere. Bruce says the services they can offer are backed up by the quality products they stock. These include gas and products from BOC Gases, and bearing and transmission products from SKF. The majority of Ohakune Engineering clients are in the primary industry consisting of market gardening and farming, saw-milling and the pulp and paper industry, who in turn all use the local transport companies. The evening concluded with drinks, BBQ and a pig on a spit, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Spot prizes were won by John Scobie, who received a BBQ donated by BOC Gases and Dave Mcllroy who won a Comet Three Hand Piece, donated by Ohakune Engineering.
