Volunteer army museum guides plan mooted
The director of the army museum in Waiouru is trying to gauge interest from the wider community in the possibility of setting up a volunteer tour guide group to help make trips to the museum more enjoyable and informative for the public. Major Colin Hodkinson said he is looking at the possibility of setting up such a group, but has to know how many people are interested before he seeks approval.
"There must be retired people who are interested in something like that. I am certain there are people around who would like to get involved in a place like this," Maj Hodkinson said. "If you had about 20 people then you're talking about asking them to give up three hours a week. What's in it for the people? They must enjoy what they're doing. We would run training for them through the different exhibits and where possible meet reasonable expenses of people who would want to be involved." The group would be co-ordinated by a host who would be employed on a permanent part-time basis. A person with a bubbly nature who can get along with anybody would suit this position Maj Hodkinson said. People interested in the idea can contact Major Hodkinson or Elizabeth Cottrell at the museum on (06) 387 691 1.
