Hazards redefined
Last week GNS staff reviewed the volcanic hazard areas for Mt Ruapehu. 'Red One Zone' is within 1.5km of the centre of the active crater, where a high risk of ballistic blocks and the possibility of pyroclastic fall and surge activity plus gas hazard. Red Two Zone is in the Whangaehu catchment where lahar risk is high due to re-forming of the lakes and possible slumping of eruption material. Orange One Zone is a ring a further kilometre out from the crater, where there is a lesser hazard of ballistic blocks etc. Orange Two Zone is in the Wahianoa and Mangatoetoenui catchments, especially on the glaciers, where there is a high risk of secondary lahars (from previously erupted ash and snow melt). Yellow zones, above the two main ski fields, represent the hazard from thawing of erupted ejecta "the level of risk varying with ice and snow volumes, slope and thickness of volcanic debris". At risk are the Mangaturuturu, Whakapapaiti, Whakapapanui catchments and the steep slopes above Turoa.
