Raetihi sewagestormwater upgrade planned
The Ruapehu District Council is currently carrying out investigation work to locate sources of stormwater infiltration into the Raetihi sewer system, either from faulty pipe work or from illegal connections. The infiltration causes sewage overflows and impairs the quality of treatment. The council has engaged a Wellingtonbased company to carry out property inspections and conduct smoke, dye and flow testing of the sewers. Apart from the location of infiltration, this information
together with closed circuit television inspection work will be used to determine what capital upgrading of the sewer and stormwater systems is necessary. Some major problems have been found in manholes with severe leakage, lack of haunching (the concrete sealing around joints), poorly fitted and semi blocked pipes and several with lids buried up to 100mm below road seal level. Construction work for the 1 995/96 stage is to start in March and continue to the end of April.
