Orautoha Transfer Station

• I wish to correct your item published last week where you stated the transfer station had been "through the system". I did suggest the holding paddock site instead of the old land fill site. I made the suggestion on the understanding that consultation would take place between the community and that a notified resource consent would be obtained for the new site thus providing an opportunity for objections. The reality is no consultation has taken place with the community or the Waimarino Community Board. On 6 October 1994 the WCB resolved: "that the environmental asset manager be asked to complete a report and attend the next community board meeting regarding the siting of the Orautoha Dump site. No report was completed and the environmental asset manager never attended the next or subsequently community board meetings. No plans, details or proposal on transfer sites have ever been submitted to the WCB. The Council did not obtain a notified resource but has granted themselves a non-notified resource consent but has not complied with the Resource Management Act because it should have consulted with the adjacent land owner who "may be adversely affected". I did sign the petition on the grounds that council management has failed miserably to comply with its Solid Waste Management Strategy and consult with thecommunity and the affected adjacent land owner.

EDITOR REPLIES: There is no mistake in the article. If you read the Ruapehu District Council meeting agenda item (page 25, RDC Agenda, 10 November 1995) you will see that the issue did in fact go "through the system". What you are debating is whether it went through the system correctly, or whether the system is fair.
