Prestigious win for Grand Chateau
Ruapehu' s Grand Chateau has been named Best Regional Accommodation in the New Zealand Tourism Awards. Award winners were announced last Friday evening at a ceremony in Dunedin. "The Grand Chateau is one of New Zealand tourism's best known establishments," said New Zealand Tourism Board public affairs manager, Mr Chris Ryan. "From its vantage point at the base of Mount Ruapehu, the Grand Chateau offers guests fishing, white water rafting, skiing, mountain biking and scenic flights." "More recently, guests have been treated to views of spectacular volcanic eruptions." Despite its recent $3 million upgrade the Grand Chateau' s 19th Century European elegance remains a strong feature. Mr Ryan said the Grand Chateau' s success in the Tourism Awards was important, not just for the local tourism industry, but for the community as a whole. 'Tourism earns New Zealand more international income than any other single export indus-
try." "Success in the tourism industry brings economic and social benefits for New Zealanders, and the Tourism Awards are an important indicator of this success," he §aid. "The 1 9 winning entries beat 156 other competitors to take the honours in New Zealand' s most prestigious tourism event," said Mr Chris Ryan. "Choosing the finalists for these awards was a difficult task for judges. Choosing from those finalists to come up with just 19 winners was even more difficult," said Mr Ryan. Among local finalists was the QEII Army Museum in Waiouru, Mountain Air of National Park and the RDC Marketing Unit. "The quality of entrants this year was just outstanding."
