Ohakune Garden Club happenings
The Ohakune Garden Club visited the garden of Priscilla Stout in Ohura Road, before their October meeting. Priscilla' s garden is a relatively new planting, but members were impressed by the variety of plants and her creative planning. She has incorporated perennials and shrubs around a few large established trees and has used the contours of the land to create a park-like effect with a bridge, pond and stream. A novel feature were the many "concrete critturs" tucked away in various flower beds, on fences and in trees. She has a few less now as several Club members purchased these for their own gardens. The business part of the meeting was held at Noeline and Trevor Reynolds' place. President Nita Wilde welcomed 18 people - including two visitors, Gaelyn and Allen Warren from Tauranga. Peggy Frew reported on her visit to Helen Dillon's seminar in Palmerston North. This was a little disappointing in view of the $25 entry charge and the big build up. Four hundred people were present but there was a poor sound system and many slides of formal gardens with few trees - not really relevant to New Zealand gardeners. Ten members nominated their gardens for the annual Club competition. These will be judged twice - in early November and January or February, by members of the Raetihi Garden Club. A group expressed an interest in going on the Ruapehu Garden Tour 25-26 November. This will be subsidised by the Club. Financial members wishing to go are asked to contact Maureen - phone 385-8455 or Kandy 3858090 and pay $10 by 10 November. The next meeting will be the Christmas party. It will be held at Nita and Bruce Wilde' s on 28 November, starting at 7pm with a garden walk followed by a pot luck meal. Members are asked to bring a $5 gift to exchange. The competitions were judged by the visitors. The results were - Tulip: 1 S Deadman, 2 S Deadman, 3 N Reynolds. Flower of Choice: 1 F Frew, 2 J Martin, 3 M Warren. Shrub of Choice: 1 L McQuarrie, 2 L McQuarrie, 3 N Wilde. • *
