Pets and fun mix at school

Orautoha School held it's pet show and fun day last Friday. The weather was fine and fairly warm and as, some one put it, "just what the doctor ordered". At Orauhoha, as is the case in most rural schools, it is not only the parents who turn up in support of their children. Many or most of the families in the valley come along and lend a hand and enter into tile spiiit of things. There were not only pets on show. It was also a chance for the children to show off their cooking skills, their flower arrangement skills using sand saucer displays, their art work and their stories. David Squires from Raetihi, was on hand to judge the collage section (art), Lynley Graham (sandsaucer), Dorothy McNie (unusual container), Gerald Olds (stocking pet), Dorothy and Lynley (vegetable pet), Keith Journeaux (short stories) and Jane Mercon (pet house). In the cooking section, Pat Olds judged the pikelets, Gaye Fahey judged the chocolate cake. Heather Oli ver picked the best of the best entries for the uncooked slice and Gaye Fahey judged the carrot cake. There was a good line up of pets with five categories represented. There were: lambs; dogs; other pets; unusual pets and; best dressed. Judges were, Geoff Fahey, Steve Mercon, Mr McNie, Ross Journeaux. Apart from lambs and dogs the more usual of pets, the unusual turned up frogs and a few more cats and rabbits. Some got loose and scampered all over the place, to screams of laughter and in some cases, just plain screams. After lunch, it was time for the parents and any one else, to take on the might of the children in some sports fun. Novelty races, such as having to dress up in overalls and gumboots, then run down to one end to have one of your team mates take off those outer clothes, put them on and take off down the other end. A relay with a difference to say the least. Then there was the wheelbarrow race, with plenty of cheating going on and some parents with suspect driving skills. Andrea Nola the school' s principal, said she was pleased with the day and thanked all parents, judges and friends for their support and help and for their willingness to join in with the sporting activities. Results and winners in next week's Ruapehu Bulletin.
