Ruapehu gas release continues

Moderate but semi-continuous emissions of gas from Ruapehu 's crater continued over the weekend along with volcanic tremors lasting up to two minutes, a volcanic earthquake and a tectonic (plate movement) earthquake from 70 kilometres below Mt Ruapehu. The tectonic quake measured 4.5 on the Richter scale at 5.30am on Sunday morning but few people in Ohakune felt the shake. With the "significant gas emissions and small ash eruptions" the alert level on the volcano remains at three. Ash continued to fall yesterday, re-covering the upper slopes of Turoa ski fields, following the end-of-season closure on Sunday.
