"Opportunistic"
offence
Marcus Herewini, 20, tableland of Raetihi, pleaded guilty to a charge of theft of a radar detector, steering wheel club and set of car keys, together valued at $245, taken from a motor vehicle in Raetihi on 22 August. Court heard that Herewini had not been responsible for the initial taking of the Ford Falcon ute from Taupo but he had committed an "opportunistic" offence when the unlocked vehicle was later found in Raetihi. All the property was subsequently recovered. Herewini was convicted and sentenced to 40 hours community service and, since a motor vehicle was involved, Judge Watson invoked a law which entitled him to impose a 3-month period of disqualification from driving. Counsel: Eric Forster.
