Lahars provide spectacle
At 11 .05am on Friday another lahar swept under the Whangaehu Bridge atT angiwai as a result of the Mt Ruapehu eruptions.New Zeaiand Rail's early warning system had been tripped at the upper reaches of the Whangaehu River and it took just over two hours before the lahar reached Tangiwai. Ruapehu Construction Ltd had blocked the road off and a considerable amount oftraffic built up over the 20 minute closure. More people were curious than concerned about the road closure and many people photographed or videoed the lahar as it swept under the bridge. Observers estimated that the river rose approximately 50cm. The river became very turbulent and more of the mud banks were washed into river. Massey University scientists were on hand to take sediment samples so they could analyse the difference in loading as the eruption progressed.A railway spokesman said the river was at level two when this photo was taken and that the level had been up to four.
